Sanaa Alerts is a free creative opportunities platform for East African creatives, with a particular focus on Swahili-speaking communities.

We find, review and curate grants, residencies, fellowships, open calls, training programmes and other opportunities for creative practitioners.

We present key information in a clear, consistent format and connect users directly to the original opportunity or application.

Sanaa Alerts is by artists, for artists. It was created from our own experience navigating the creative sector and recognising how difficult it can be to find opportunities, determine whether they are relevant, and access information easily.

Sanaa Alerts

For Artists, by Artists.”

Creative opportunities exist, but access to information about them is uneven.

Opportunities are spread across websites, social media platforms, mailing lists and professional networks. They can be lengthy, difficult to assess quickly, or published only in English. It is also not always clear whether East African creatives are eligible.

As a result, creatives can miss opportunities that may be relevant to them because they did not find them, could not determine whether they were eligible, or could not easily access the information.

At the same time, organisations offering opportunities need effective ways to reach the creative communities they are seeking to support. There is a gap between those offering opportunities and those looking for them. Sanaa Alerts exists to bridge that gap.

The Problem

Our Role

We connect opportunity providers with creative practitioners by bringing relevant opportunities into one accessible platform.

We identify opportunities ourselves and also accept submissions from organisations through our opportunity submission form. We review submissions against our publishing criteria before featuring them.

Our publishing

principle

Sanaa Alerts is for East African creatives, but every opportunity we feature must be open to Tanzanian applicants.

An opportunity may be international, continental or regional in scope, but if Tanzanian creatives are not eligible to apply, we do not feature it.

This allows creatives across East Africa to use and benefit from the platform while ensuring that the opportunities we publish are relevant to our starting community in Tanzania.

This principle will remain central as Sanaa Alerts develops.

Kanuni Yetu ya Uchapishaji

Each Sanaa Alerts feature brings together the information a creative needs to quickly assess an opportunity:

This allows a creative to quickly determine whether an opportunity is worth pursuing before going to the original source for the full requirements and application process.

We do not replace the original information or application process.

Who it is for

Costs involved

We recognise that some opportunities have requirements we cannot change, including a specified level of English proficiency. Where this applies, we state it clearly.

Sanaa Alerts cannot remove requirements set by opportunity providers, but we can make those requirements visible and easier to understand.

We believe there are artists in Tanzania and across East Africa who can benefit from opportunities beyond their immediate networks.

Our role is to make those opportunities easier to find, understand and assess, so that creatives can decide for themselves whether to pursue them.

"Sanaa Alerts does not apply for opportunities on behalf of creatives, guarantee selection or funding, or act as an agent for applicants."

In one sentence

Sanaa Alerts connects East African creatives with relevant opportunities by finding, filtering and presenting them clearly, with a particular commitment to Swahili access and keeping the platform free.
